new "making of" pics.
one of the pieces in the show is called SONG. here are some details of the piece (and one shot of it in progress)... (more pics after the jump)
there are 9 new pieces in the show. most of them are larger than any piece i've done.
ALSO, i wanted to give you guys a peek at a very cool new art exhibition. i've been following jeremy's work for a minute, but JEREMY FISH has a new exhibition called SEASONS OF CHANGE showing now at josh liner's gallery in NYC. some of you may be familiar with jeremy's paintings; for this new work, he went to Bali and collaborated with a master wood carver.

regarding the "SIRENS AND SILENCE" video i posted in the videos section: i wanted to have a little fun with you when i posted it, so i intentionally put it up with almost no description, and left it up for a few days in order to give you a chance to watch it, pass it on to friends, and post your thoughts about it. now that you've had a second to absorb, let me tell you more about it!
this piece, although based mostly on first-hand perspective footage, is not necessarily about me. in fact, i made a conscious effort to keep it the piece open to different "celebrity types"--i edited out a great deal of our faces, voices, and any LP related imagery (there's still a little bit, but not much) because i wanted it to be versatile; to be able to be applied to many different types of person who might have this experience.
this could be a piece about a movie star, a TV celebrity, a musician. it's about the frenetic pace, the travel, the potential for ups and downs, ego and depression, humor and darkness. i don't travel by private jet all the time, i don't stay in hotel rooms that look like the ones pictured all the time, and i don't get swarmed by fans at airports all the time. some people do...and this piece is about their lifestyle as much as it is a personal video journal (without the talking).
some of you commented that the piece gave you a feeling of "loneliness." i found that really interesting, because while some could say the hotel scenes looked cold, another might see the hotel scenes as the moments of peace and warmth. while the "insomnia" bit felt frustrating to some, others might see it as funny (i do!). that's what i love about a piece like this--a large portion of it is wide open for interpretation, and all of us project our own feelings and experiences into it.
i added the more obvious commentary to was the end, because that was a universal "be careful what you wish for" element, and it felt good with the door closing (which, again could feel like a warm escape from the insanity, but just as easily could feel dark and foreboding). the dynamic between the loud "siren" parts and the "silent" parts are what gave the piece its name.

Making of Glorious Excess final pics

Mike has posted final five photos of the making of his Glorious Excess artshow. Mike's art work will be on display at the Japanese American National Museum on Friday, July 11. There will be a meet and greet and autograph signing session during the opening reception from 8-10 pm.
the show is almost here. opening night is friday. doors open to the public at 8pm. i'll be there. all the art will be on display inside in the main area. there will be a line outside for autographs. feel free to wait in line, get your autograph wristband, and come in to buy something for me to sign. there will be a new book, 3 different skate deck designs, and high end paper prints for sale...all items are limited edition. here was the post about the merchandise, in case you missed it...and finally, here are some last minute (detail) pictures of some other pieces in the show. remember, if you can't make it, the art will be on display until august 3, so grab a friend and head down to JANM.

Download here. Speaking of Glorious Excess, read a preview from The World's Best Ever, the exhibition starts from Friday, July 11 to August 3 at the Japanese American National Museum.
Sponsored by DC Shoes with additional support from the James Irvine Foundation, the opening coincides with the release of Shinoda’s new DC remix shoe. All proceeds from sales of his artwork and footwear go toward the Michael K. Shinoda Endowed Scholarship at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. An opening reception for the public and autograph signing on July 11 runs from 8-10 p.m. “I believe in the work of the Japanese American National Museum,” said Shinoda, “and we have had a great relationship for the past few years. I’m proud to share the debut of this new series with the museum.”
The expanded continuation of the exhibition, a second show entitled Glorious Excess (Dies), is scheduled for the National Museum’s Miyawaki and Watanabe Galleries January 24 through March 22, 2009. Accompanying the artwork will be text about Shinoda’s meteoric career and examples of his commitment to invoke change through his music including Projekt Revolution, Fort Minor and Live Earth.
“The Japanese American National Museum is pleased to feature the art of Mike Shinoda,” stated Akemi Kikumra Yano, CEO of the National Museum. “Mike is a compassionate artist who is utilizing his talents and skills to have a larger impact on our society. His desire to help others is truly global in light of his contributions to Live Earth and Music For Relief, among other efforts. We celebrate his creativity and contributions with this unique exhibition.”
“This show also represents another step for our institution in reaching out to younger audiences,” Yano continued. “A grant from the James Irvine Foundation has allowed us to gather information indicating that community and arts organizations like the National Museum need to develop new approaches and innovative content if we hope to be relevant to each new generation. We believe working with Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda will help us accomplish this.”

i'm going to be on a plane tomorrow, and playing shows for the next few days, so i don't know if i'll be able to write. just wanted to say a huge thank you to:
-all the people who helped make "GLORIOUS EXCESS (BORN)" happen -my great friends who showed up and checked things out -everyone who bought something (and supported the scholarship at ACCD).
