this was another great video, put together by DC shoes, covering the art show. i met the first recipient of my ACCD scholarship that evening--this was the video that caught it!

This week, I put paintbrush to canvas for the first piece in my upcoming GLORIOUS EXCESS (DIES) exhibition. The show is only a few months away (January '09 at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles).

First, a refresher course: in June of this year, I debuted the show and concept in GLORIOUS EXCESS (BORN)--a series of work following a fictional celebrity character who is filthy rich, morally vacant, and good at one thing: being a celebrity. He's not a rock star, he's not an actor, he's not famous for any particular talent; he simply became famous because he's good at it, and plays by the rules of "star culture" in order to maintain his status.

I knew when I started, over a year ago, that this character's addiction to celebrity status would inevitably grow to a point where he could no longer feed it. There would be a time when the expectations of him would be too high, the emotional baggage would be too heavy, he will have tried every trick. There would be only one way to reach the next level. That next level is what january's show is all about.

In January he will die!

Initially, I thought it might be fun to have three parts to the show: birth, life, and death. but the "life" section felt unnecessary. His story is a meteoric rise and catastrophic crash-and-burn. And then he will be gone. The fun part will be figuring out how it's going to work.

In the meantime, I'll be posting some images of the stuff in progress, the ideas i'm thinking about, and related materials...come back often, I don't want you to miss anything.

Hey everyone,

It looks like my second JANM art show, Glorious Excess (Dies), which was scheduled for January, is going to be postponed. Although I would have liked to hold the show in January, unforeseen scheduling complications have made that goal an impossibility. I apologize to anyone who this change of plans may affect negatively; I wish it were that case that I could make it happen.

In the January slot, Clement and I are trying to organize an alternative show. This show will be a collection of other artists' work, likely curated by me and Joe Hahn.

I hope to open the Glorious Excess (Dies) show in late 2009.

Thanks for your understanding,

I finally got around to responding to this one:

POSTED BY SQUISHY_HO Do you think you could give out tips to people who just started painting? Cause it's my case, i try stuff but i feel it doesn't work out right. Could you give out "where to start" tips and like do's and don'ts? Or a book recommendation, cause you seem good in that, too :p thanks a lot =)

Here are some basic notes about starting a piece in acrylics.

Acrylic is a plastic-based paint, so it dries quickly (as opposed to oils, which take 2 week+ to dry, depending on how thick you work). I like to use Liquitex Acrylics. I learned the following exercise in college; once you've tried this and gotten some experience with it, feel free to improvise or try other methods.

As for colors, start with a very limited palette, so you start getting a feel for mixing colors. I would recommend: Burnt Umber, Ultramarine, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, and White or White Gesso. I prefer White Gesso over white paint; it's more opaque and smoother than regular paint (it's meant to coat canvases--that's the stuff that makes your basic canvas white). Notice there is no black...that's because you make black by mixing Burnt Umber and Ultramarine, thereby making your blacks slightly more complex and able to go warm or cool. From this color palette, you can mix most colors you'll want to achieve.

Get a variety of brushes that feel good to you. I'd say get at least five, including a large flat brush (a #20 or bigger, depending on how big your canvas is) and a small detail brush (like a Winsor Newton #1). Cheap student grade brushes are good for beginners.

http://www.mastersonart.com/products/images_products/premier_enlarge.jpg

For a palette, I recommend the Masterson one with the sponge bottom and the pad of paper palettes to put paint on (above). ACRYLICS DRY QUICKLY--thin coats dry in minutes--so this palette keeps your paints wet and usable.

For beginners, I would recommend choosing a photo that you like, and try to copy it. Once you've mastered that, move on to live still life, live human poses, and landscapes--whatever interests you at the time. I did all of these in school. We also spent months of study on the live nude of all ages, colors, and shapes (drawing, sculpting, and painting), and studied and dissected cadavers from the USC medical lab. All of these things were amazing learning experiences.

For now, start like this: before you do any painting, "tone" the canvas with a coat of Burnt Sienna (or any medium range color), thinned on your palette by brush with water. Cover the whole canvas with the burnt sienna; once it's dry, start your sketch in pencil, then paint. This is a good idea for many reasons: 1.) it gives your painting a warm glow, 2.) if your paint doesn't completely cover the surface, the canvas showing through won't be stark white, and 3.) from this color base, you're able to build in both a light and a dark direction. Color-wise, you're starting from a middle ground.

Also, don't forget to use the most appropriate brush for the job...If you're filling in a larger area with color, remember to switch to a larger brush, so your color fields look consistent and you don't waste your time. And, of course, if you're painting a detail part, don't get lazy and forget to use a detail brush.

Traditional painters will say to start with a sketch and build your painting from dark to light. I just do whatever makes the painting look good to me :)

Майку нравится этот художник  :flag:  картины потрясающие, с налетом голубизны  ^^

Anyway, on to other things. Artist Kehinde Wiley is showing at Deitch Projects in New York. I feel like saying more, but I think the images say it all. It's absolutely stunning.

The Xander (high-top) shoe is part of the Mike Shinoda DC Remix Series™ Collection, in conjunction with the Glorious Excess (Born) art show on display at the Japanese American National Museum in downtown LA.

This second DC Remix Series™ project is a great juxtaposition of Mike's unique influences: accomplished artist versus record-breaking musician, American upbringing versus Japanese heritage.

Mike chose traditional Japanese patterns and koi scale textures for his shoe and packaging; the sole features custom fish scale tooling created just for this project and artwork sublimated underneath. 'I've always loved fish, especially koi, and I thought the scales would make a fun pattern for the bottom of the shoe.' The many patterns in the in-box booklet and packaging reference fabrics and origami paper patterns that surrounded Shinoda growing up. 'When I was young, some people were surprised to find out that I am half Japanese. Growing up, I always looked forward to celebrating each New Year's Day with that side of my family. I love Japanese food and art, so I guess it's no surprise that those things sometimes end up being a part of my work.'

Mike's art, renditions of his latest work, is found on the upper, the insole, and the outsole; his signature is on the heel; and 'limited edition' is embroidered in Japanese on the tongue.
