EVERYTHING IN EXCESS.

Mike Shinoda, of Linkin Park and Fort Minor fame, opened part 1 of his art show, Glorious Excess, tonight at the JANM downtown.

“Mike, look tough.”

As I mentioned a while back, the show comments on our cultural obsession with celebrity and Hollywoodization of everyday life.

Friends and family.

Joe Hahn (Linkin Park), Maurice (12bar), and Peter (Cassette).

So I’ve never seen a line like this for an art show.  These kids waited hours outside to just catch a glimpse of Mike, take in his art, and hopefully get an autograph or two from the man himself.

The guys left for tour earlier this morning.  Check here to see if they’re stopping by your city.

great piece on the show by the hundreds. (thanks for dropping by, fellas)

http://www.thehundreds.com/wordpress/

coverage to come on current tv and juxtapoz.

BTW, some images of the art are floating around...it's too bad you can't really get a feel for the pieces from the images online. most of the pieces are around three to four feet tall. the one that you see on the splash page (and the background here) is called "ICON." as you can tell in the close-up shot, there's a ton of detail that you miss when you're not standing in front of the actual piece. ICON is 8 feet tall by 6 feet wide, slightly metallic, and made up of thousands of dollar signs. yes, i placed each one by hand.

the show is open at the japanese american national museum now through august 3rd. please drop by and check it out.

Glorious Excess (Born) Opening at JAMN

Sunday, July 13, 2008

Friday night was the big opening of my husband’s art show, Glorious Excess (Born) at the Japanese American National Museum in downtown LA.

We spent the early evening surrounded by family and friends that made the drive through Friday LA traffic to celebrate with us. Most exciting for me was seeing the work that I’ve watched go from sketch to completion displayed in the museum. I am especially proud of the time that Mike put into this show to make a statement about pop culture and the world’s obsession with celebrity, whether or not that fame is granted through talent.

Something else that I’m excited about - a few of the photographs that I have taken of Mike working (whether it be of him painting a canvas that stretches across our garage floor or of him on stage) are printed in the Glorious Excess (Born) Art Book. It was fun to be a part of the observation process of his work coming together and it’s cool to see some of that observation in print. In the book, all of the works on display at the museum are printed, as well as photographs that give a peak into the process of creating some of the art pieces. Similar to the way he writes music, Mike likes to mix different styles when working on visual art. Each individual piece shows his ability to use spray paint, acrylic, digital media, or a mix of the three. Not told in the description of the medium used is the countless hours Mike spent on the computer, either researching or creating; rolls of masking tape for covering areas that had been painted before adding a layer of spray paint; ink and sharpie; the small canvas used as test material for transferring the images that make up the background of Song and then the additional canvases it took when the process didn’t work as planned; the massive digital printing of Icon and the hope that it would still look as amazing at 72” x 96” as it did at 8”x10”; scissors, some kind of glue or sticky stuff and finishes (check out Momento Morti up close at the show for a good look at the amount of work that went into cutting and pasting); and the light dusting of silver spray paint that covered our camera when it was left too close to the action (no harm done - it actually looks like we meant to personalize it that way).
Mike’s paintings are up from now until August 3rd. If you make it down to the Japanese American National Museum, take the time to go through the whole museum. The permanent exhibition about the history of Japanese Americans is incredibly powerful, especially the area that talks about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. They actually have one of the structures from the internment camps. Standing inside the small, shack like building that was a typical dwelling for those put in the camps, I felt that I had a better sense of what my father-in-law and his family went through during that time in our history. It’s a powerful reminder of a grave mistake driven by fear that the US government made. And, the exhibit is also hopeful because it shows the way the Japanese Americans were able to accept what had happened and move on - beyond not just the internment camps, but the other laws that kept many Japanese Americans from getting full citizenship and the right to vote. Another cool part of the permanent exhibition - often there is a Japanese American volunteer in their 70s, 80s, or 90s who was interned that is happy to share his or her story with visitors. It’s an experience to take advantage of now, while these storytellers are still with us.

The above picture was taken at the opening for Glorious Excess (Born). Pictured with me and my husband Mike is artist Corey Sandelius and his lovely fiancée. So... what better time than now to tell you about one of my favorite painters!

Mike and I have two original paintings by Corey as well as a few limited edition prints. Personally I love his unique combination of prints, patterns and colors. You can see his influence by pre-1900 Japanese Prints but what really stands out to me is how his art reflects his literary influences which include Ernest Hemingway and William Shakespeare. More on the surface of things, these influences are shown by the direct quotes of writers that make up some of the titles of his paintings. But what stands out to me is I can feel the literary influences - the melancholy of a strained relationship or the vast loneliness as felt in many of Hemingway’s works, the exploration of human emotion and the pitfalls, humor and triumphs that we’ve read in Shakespeare’s works. Reaction to art is an individual emotion, and I find that in figure drawing it is difficult for an artist to capture human emotion and really make that feeling come alive to me as the viewer. I believe this is where Corey crosses over to be an exceptional artist. I always look forward to seeing his new work, and watch it continue to develop.

You can check out his website. Or his myspace. Or, if you are in the LA area, he’ll be showing his work at Billy Shire Fine Arts, 5790 Washington Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232, opening reception Saturday, August 18, 2007 from 7-10 pm.

Mike talks about the first recipient of his art scholarship

Mike talks to Artisan News about the first recipient of the Michael K Shinoda Endowed Scholarship, download here. Mike has also updated his blog with new Glorious Excess photos.

"Once again, just like my other art shows and all the art merchandise that's been up on my website at mikeshinoda.com, the proceeds from this are going to my scholarship at Art Center of Design which is a scholarship awarded to illustration and graphic design students based on financial need and on merit. You have to be good at what you do and you have to honestly need the money to get you through school. Actually tonight I'm going to be meeting, I didn't mention this to anyone else but I'm going to be meeting the very first recipient of the scholarship for the first time tonight. His name is Daniel and I'm excited to meet him. It's so great to see it come full circle. I'm really excited to meet Daniel and just to know that the scholarship is real. He's being helped through school and anybody who wants to support that or just likes the artwork, that's what you're doing. You're doing more than just for yourself getting a cool thing to put on the wall or in your room or whatever, you are helping someone through school."

Glorious Excess!
July 29th, 2008 · No Comments

Being from the same home town I have been aware of Mike Shinoda for sometime now.  Today I got a gift in the mail.  The DC/MS Remix 2 shoes.  This is the second shoe that Mike has done with DC.  This latest Shoe ties into Mike’s new series of art.

When I first learned of this series I felt compelled to write about it:  Glorious Excess Born.  The name lends itself to gluttony.  I feel that they are almost interchangeable.

Artistic commentary on the life of a central character.  Showing the different aspects of the celebrity life and societies obsession whit that life.  It is very disturbing the attention any one American gives to his or her favorite celebrity.  Hours upon hours a day.  The obsession for money, power and fame seem to take control of both the celebrity but also the society that creates that celebrity.  The celebrity only exists because of the attention a society chooses to give them.

Being a member of Linkin Park, the biggest rock band on the planet, affords Mike the first hand experience to articulate the gloriously excessive culture that we live in today.  What better person to illustrate the grime realities of supper stardom.

Like a villain in a film, the character stares back at you through the painting.  He seems to be acknowledging your awareness of him.  With hundreds spilling out of his pocket, woman draped over him, and AK 47.  He acknowledges you but doesn’t seem to be bothered, as if he does not give a fuck.

Societies unquenchable thirst for instant gratification grants a pass to these celebrities THEY put on this pedestal.  Face reality or take your daily dose of people/us/intouch magazine for brief moments of levity?  Take the levity, going against the grain causes abrasions.

In January there will be the second instalment of this series: Glorious Excess Dies

The Excesses of Mike Shinoda

August 10, 2008
The Rafu Shimpo

Producer/musician and artist Mike Shinoda, currently on tour with Linkin Park, took time from his busy schedule to talk about about his latest artistic endeavor “The Glorious Excess,” now finishing its run Sunday at the Japanese American National Museum. The show offers Shinoda’s darkly humorous take on today’s celebrity culture.

RAFU: When and how did you start to conceptualize your new exhibition?

MS: Got to a point where the pervasiveness of “celebrity news” concerned me. It seemed like it has jumped out of its niche into places where it doesn’t belong. I would be watching the news, and thinking, “of all the things going on in the world right now, why are they covering so-and-so’s breakup?” It didn’t make sense to me. Add to that the fact that I’m supposed to somehow “belong” to that celebrity group—and I really don’t feel like I do in a lot of ways—and you can see how the topic started to become really interesting to me. The Glorious Excess (Born) show was my way of diving into those topics, trying to find answers. It follows a central “celebrity” character, who is filthy rich, slightly violent, and famous without any particular skill or talent.

RAFU: How is creating art different from songwriting?

MS: They’re really similar, actually. I always remember being in art school, working for hours on a painting and putting it up in front of a class of 35 people to criticize it…then going home, working on a song for hours and taking to my band…to criticize it! In my experience, you have to have the same sense of openness to the criticism—and sense of humor—to deal with both things and make them productive.

RAFU: You seem to have a dark sense of humor when it comes to celebrity. What is the symbolism of the skulls in your artwork?

MS: In the beginning, I used the skull because it was a rock n’ roll reference. After I did a couple paintings, my brother saw them and said, “do you remember that Vanitas movement?” Learned about Vanitas in college; it was a movement in Europe in the 15th century, where painters injected symbolism into their still life paintings. Symbols such as the skull, smoke, bubbles, and clocks were meant to remind people of the brevity of life. Funny enough, today’s celebrity culture is obsessed with the same things: skull designs, cigars, champagne, expensive watches…

RAFU: It’s great you’re back in Little Tokyo following your stint as a Nisei Week marshall. What was that experience like?

MS: That was bizarre. It was my first parade, and it felt weird just to sit on display and have people wave at you. I think I might be better suited for performing with my band than making that kind of “public appearance,” ha!

RAFU: Was it important to you to have this exhibit at JANM?

MS: Clement Hanami and the team at JANM were great. I had to be on tour when the physical setup of the show was going on, so it took a lot of preparation and planning. They helped me make this idea a reality, and I appreciate it very much.

RAFU: Can you talk a little about your shoes and your scholarship at Art Center?

MS: This month, I’m releasing a new sneaker with DC Shoes. I designed the shoe with my art, including a clear sole with 4-color artwork underneath. They’re really unique.

It’s going to be a limited run, so I’ve been encouraging fans to get them quickly before they run out. The information about where to buy is up on wwwdcshoes.com/shinoda. We’ll be selling some on wwwmikeshinoda.com as well. My bandmate Chester called them “the perfect shoe!” Proceeds from the shoe—and my art show—benefit my scholarship at Art Center College of Design, my alma mater. The scholarship benefits illustration and design students based on merit and financial need.

RAFU: What can we look forward to in the second exhibit in the winter?

MS: I don’t want to give any surprises away…but keep in mind that this show followed a central celebrity character in his “Born” phase. The next show is called Glorious Excess (Dies).

RAFU: Finally, what other projects are you working on (Ft. Minor, Projekt Revolution)?

MS: I’m on tour with Linkin Park right now; it’s the 5th installment of our Projekt Revolution summer tour, with support from Chris Cornell, The Bravery, Ashes Divide, Atreyu, and many others. We’ll be on tour all over the U.S. for the rest of the summer, and all the tour info is available at wwwlinkinpark.com/live.
